2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI photos featured on Autoblog.com

Last month I picked up the Autoblog.com long-term 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI. The car is in Autoblog’s possession for the next six months or so, and it had just arrived from Detroit. I was not only tasked with photographing the car, but it would be my ride up to the Monterey car week. I love the diesel engine in the car – it provided the fuel economy of a Prius while delivering the driving experience of a normal car – and I only had to fill up once the entire week. I didn’t love the interior, however. The seats were made from a fake leather that felt terrible to the touch, and many of the materials in the car felt cheap. The diesel engine just about makes up for it, though.

You can see the entire set of VW Jetta TDI photos over at Autoblog.com.

Both the Mercedes-Benz CLS and the Audi A7 are both “four-door coupes” and perhaps the most attractive car that each company makes, so a comparison is inevitable. Autoblog recently put the two to the test, featuring my photography. You can see the photos here.

Pagani Huayra North American debut

Last week the Pagani Huayra (pronounced “wire-rah”) made its North American debut at the Pasadena Art Center College of Design. While I have to admit I’m still getting used to the exterior design, I can definitely appreciate the design work that went into all of the little details. Even functional components like the suspension are works of art. I’d love to have a day to photograph the car in a proper setting.

Multi-car photoshoots aren’t the easiest, especially when trying to arrange cars with a short window of good lighting, but the results are often worth it. Yesterday evening I photographed an Audi A7 and a Mercedes-benz CLS, and the German pair of four-door coupes made for an attractive couple. The rest of the photos will be published in a comparison test on Autoblog.com in the next couple weeks.

I made by podcasting debut earlier this week, discussing photography tips with a few other members of the Autoblog team. There ended up not being too much discussion about photography, but I’d recommend listening to it anyway if you enjoy cars.

24 Hours of Le Mans photos featured on Autoblog.com

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the one event I’ve been hoping to attend since I started photographing cars, and I was lucky enough to finally go this year. The bad news was the I got the invite just a few weeks before the race, well after the last day to apply for photo credentials. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to get trackside, but fortunately I managed to talk my way into a photo vest for a few hours at sunset and and sunrise. Having never been to the track there was a huge learning curve – even finding where to get into the photos areas was a huge challenge – but by the end I was satisfied with my photos for being a “newbie”. I hope that I’ll be able to attend again, especially with a photo credential for the entire race.
